I haven't had the pleasure of testing the beta9 yet, but the grapevine
had murmurs of them ripping out the esd code.  Try running:

strings /usr/bin/gflashplayer |grep esd

and see if it returns anything.

When I first discovered the whole socket/esd hack for flash, I did so
with a lot of help from "strings" to try and reverse engineer what the
binary was doing.
