I have the Dell GX620 and here is what I did:
        SOUND              = Y
        SOUND_DAEMON       = "esd"
        VOLUME             = 75
        SMODULE_01         = snd-intel8x0
        SMODULE_02         = snd-pcm-oss

and for my Dell GX280:
        SOUND              = Y
        SOUND_DAEMON       = "esd"
        VOLUME             = 75
        SMODULE_01         = i810_audio

I also made sure that the audiolist contained the driver name. I had to
manually add the snd-intel8x0 to the list. I may have had to add another
i810_audio to the list as well with the proper ID number (I can't remember if
I did or not).

Works fine with me. The snd-pcm-oss for the GX620 is what finally got it to
work.
