I found this too when I first set up an 802.11b access point. Then (in the name of security) I started running OpenVPN for all wireless connections and the situation dramatically improved. I'm not sure why; maybe because the OpenVPN layer includes compression, or maybe because the OpenVPN transport uses UDP and perhaps deals better with packet loss ? Either way I've been very happy with this set up for years now. (I haven't tried XDMCP over wireless mind you, only remote X11 applications).
