I wouldn't expect enabling swap to fix this problem.

You more likely need to add a frequency setting to the lts.conf file, to
tell the graphics card/driver how to drive the monitor. You also may
need a complete modeline.

I've got a 1920x1200 monitor, and I need to specify this:

   X_MODE_0      = 1920x1200 193.16  1920 2048 2256 2592  1200 1201 1204
1242
   X_HORZSYNC    = "31-94"
   X_VERTREFRESH = "50-85"

Your settings will certainly be different.

You might try booting with a live CD, and looking at the Xorg.conf file
that gets automatically generated.

You can also set:

    SCREEN_01 = shell

in the lts.conf file. Then, after bootup, you'll have a text screen.
type 'startx', to launch X. Then, quit the X server by hitting
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, which should return you to the shell. Then, look at
the Xorg log file. I think it's buried somewhere in the /tmp directory
on the workstation.

Looking at that file, you should see what things the driver is trying
and rejecting.
