thank you for your help noel. the LTSP server is running on a Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop machine. It is running Gnome 2.16.1. I have set SOUND=Y and SOUND_DAEMON=esd in the lts.conf file. I have checked that programs set to use esd works correctly. Also, prior to adding the lines mentioned in the doc, i checked the env parameters in the ltsp client, and noticed that the ESPEAKER value is set properly.
