Way of checking is OK.
What is happening is that Gnome sets up ESPEAKER on his own (remember 
that ESD is the default sound system of Gnome), but the script is not 
being run.

Your solution is to find a place where the script is effectively run, 
but run on behalf on the user (run on behalf of root doesn't work) and 
where the environment variables stay until the session.

I do not know where that place is for Gnome (I found it for KDE as you 
can read in Wiki) and I can not search for it today. I searched 
yesterday, but didn't found it. It is not any of the /etc/gdm/P* 
directories.
