I had the same problem with a USB stick but funnily I could mount it with:

   mount /dev/sda /mnt

All the data was readable. Some time ago I read a note (don't remember where),
that some manufacturers do it this way to save some hundred bytes of the
partition table.

Todd, would you advise to always reformat and partition such sticks. Maybe
it's not worth the effort to find some workaround.
But if there only would be a change of some few characters in a nice udev rule
I would be happy if these users also could use their sticks under Linux like
under MS-Windows.
