I recall at one time when ALSA was superceding OSS that in theory, a 
server-side ALSA driver could be made network-transparent such that ALSA 
apps would 'just work', and by extension, OSS apps would as well with 
the ALSA oss driver.  I don't think that ever happened.  Do you think we 
could influence the development of such a beast?  There are probably 
people who could get a working prototype put together quickly if they 
were asked politely, and who knows, it could then be brought up to code 
by lesser mortals.
