Thanks. That directory doesn't exist on my system; I have /etc/X11/xinit
with no subdirectories, and /etc/X11/xinit.d also with no subdirectories. I
copied the xsession-lbus-start script into /etc/X11/xinit.d, gave it a
shebang, and made it executable.

All of a sudden, local devices have sprung to life! Thank you very much for
your help.
