Look at installing either Gnome-watchdog or Xterminator.  Watchdog does a 
better job a
killing on logout, and Xterminator does a better job at killing on login.  But 
I don't
think it wise to run both at the same time.  Given your description I think
gnome-watchdog would be your best choice.
