I'm sure you know about this, but try to enable the memory cache in Firefox - even if it sounds absurd. You can also install Opera which don't use the X server memory for caching. (see http://www.mille-xterm.org/en/Terminal_Memory_Usage ) Firefox3 try to correct this (?).
