Yes!! Sorry for very slow reply, I forgot about it as soon as I got it
working.
Unfortunately, my idea didn't work becuase files like inittab are generated
dynamically by the initrd, which my older one did not do.
Instead I downloaded the LTSP4.1 iso which had an updated Xorg on it and
used the kernel I compiled for LTSP3 and it worked straight away.
