Hi David, Well, I'm not going to be able to provide you with much help because I'm basically writing to say that "it can be done" but not with much info. :/
I did get Compiz running on an Ubuntu 8.04 setup with an ATI Radeon 9550 card using the radeon driver. And the performance was quite good (Pentium 4 Dell desktop with 512MB RAM as the terminal)! However it was uninteresting to me because that driver or card only seems to support a max resolution of 2048 in either direction for 3D and I have a dual 1600x1200 monitor setup for a grand total resolution of 3200x1200. I'd rather have the pixels than the eye candy. :) I did have to hack on the /usr/bin/compiz wrapper to get Compiz to start and it still whined when it started, but I promise that it did work. Some of the things I remember having to do were basically to turn off the section about checking for whether the X driver is whitelisted, because it assumes that the X log is on the local system. I think maybe the xdpyinfo command that checks for the Composite extension also didn't work and I needed to turn off that section.
