Actually, for recent versions of X.org, at least the version included with 
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, Xinerama & ATI's MergedFB are both basically dead. 
They've been superceded by a new X extension called XRandR, or sometimes 
just RandR.  Here's a link to get you started with it:

I'm successfully using it for dual-headed 2D terminals on LTSP5 in Hardy, 
and I even used it for dual-headed 3D compiz effects (what I was writing 
about previously).  That's how I ran into the max of 2048 pixels in 
either dimension with my card/driver.

I hope to hack a little on the LTSP client scripts and submit a patch here
which would allow dual-monitor configurations in lts.conf without needing 
to provide a whole custom X configuration file.
