Actually, for recent versions of X.org, at least the version included with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, Xinerama & ATI's MergedFB are both basically dead. They've been superceded by a new X extension called XRandR, or sometimes just RandR. Here's a link to get you started with it: http://www.x.org/wiki/Projects/XRandR I'm successfully using it for dual-headed 2D terminals on LTSP5 in Hardy, and I even used it for dual-headed 3D compiz effects (what I was writing about previously). That's how I ran into the max of 2048 pixels in either dimension with my card/driver. I hope to hack a little on the LTSP client scripts and submit a patch here which would allow dual-monitor configurations in lts.conf without needing to provide a whole custom X configuration file.
