OK, granted that it is not a good idea to use the
local harddrive in the thin client, but is it
possible?

I converted 10 Pentium Is with only 16MB RAM to thin
clients. My server is running Debian 4.0 in GNOME, and
the thin clients seem to work OK as long as I set
their screen resolution to 800x600 and turn on network
swap. Now that I have the network up and running, I
realized that there are some files on the clients'
harddrives which I want to move to the server.

Most of the clients still have Windows95/98 installed
in their harddrives, but I have been unable to get
them to network to my Linux server with Samba. I can't
use a liveCD or LiveUSB to boot them up and then
network to the server, because they don't have CD-ROMs
or USB ports and they only have 16MB of RAM anyway,
which is too low for any liveCD which I have tried. I
can't physically remove the client's harddrives and
stick them in the server because they are IDE and the
server uses SATA.

The only way that I can get the files off the Pentium
I computers is too boot up Windows95/98 and compress
the files into 1.4MB files which can be transferred
via floppy disk. However this is very time
consuming--it will probably take me an entire day to
do this for the 10 computers. It would be much easier
if I could just read the thin client's harddrives and
grab the files.

Cheers,
Amos
