I can't blame them for choosing a €1 disc over a €15 > USB-stick ;-) > You could always copy the cd iso to the server, then mount it with the loopback option, and then all students could access it simultaneously. Let us know if you need instructions on that. Or perhaps it would work even if you just did a simple file copy of the cd contents to the server.
