I realised I'd omitted one vital step: > Purge the transitional AMD driver > apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-amd So I went back into the chroot, and did that. Exited, then rebuilt the image: sudo ltsp-update-image That definitely did make a difference. Not quite what I was hoping for though: I got an X display of sorts before a text screen with a PCI Device Table, then to the 'No bootable device available' screen. It looks like the BIOS got reset. I changed settings back to network PXE boot and also changed XSERVER=vesa. This time I got an error on tty1: module.c: Failed to open module "module-x11-xsmp": module-x11-mp.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. I tried again with XSERVER=auto. It gets as far as displaying a rather dodgey 'X', then an attempt at a desktop before restarting, with a reset BIOS. Strange!
