I just ran into the same problem and found this discussion about it:

Unfortunately for me, my users are also part of a windows domain so I'm
pondering the ramifications of having them without "domain user" as
their primary group. For the moment I'm going to try simply turning off
the nautilus feature that puts drives on the desktop and just provide
users with a link to their /media/$user directory.
