Did that. Looks absolutely like an xorg.conf issue.

Testing against a Samsung Syncmaster CRT that supports these resolutions:
Contents of lts.conf

[default]
    SOUND = True
    LOCALDEV = True
    CONFIGURE_X = True
    SERVER = 192.168.1.7
    SCREEN_07 = ldm
    LOCAL_APPS = true
    XSERVER = vesa
    X_MODE_0 = 1024x768
    X_MODE_1 = 800x600
    X_MODE_2 = 640x480
    X_COLOR_DEPTH = 16

The screen keeps alternating between
xauth: creating new authority file /var/run/ldm-xauth-zzfdtjhf

and SCREEN_0

Herein are partial outputs of lspci and lspmod on the thin-client
obtained via ssh.
