this is just a thought in passing. I wonder could LTSP integrate XPRA
('screen for X'). This might allow a user to login at a thin client, start
applications, work for a bit, logout, move to another thin client, login
and see all the applications still open.

A colleague of mine used to use VNC for the same thing. As he moved around
the building, he could login quickly and see all his applications running.
One disadvantage in a large LTSP install is that if you have 500 occasional
users you wouldn't want 500 instances of firefox running in the background
on your LTSP server. On the other hand, for some users it could be really
handy.
