The command that's actually specified in the greeter code is "/sbin/poweroff -p" (debian ldm package 2:2.0.39-1). Set up a shell on your thin client and run this command as root from the commandline. Your system should hang in the same way. You might also see some output that gives you some clues as to what is happening.
Please also supply your ldm version, this helps in troubleshooting.
