Greetings!
I have encountered a most peculiar X-problem. In my lab of 10 identical (old)
Dell Optiplex GX1 (P3, 450 Mhz) all machines run well on LTSP5 under ubuntu
8.04. Currently, I use three different types of monitors which does not seem to
pose any problems so far.
One of the monitors, however is not properly recognized by Xorg. After the PXE
screen it does show the graphical ubuntu screen with the moving bar. After that
the screen gets blank. Ctrl+Alt+F7 shows the repeated error message:
"(ldmgtkgreet:#): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :6" where # is a number
increasing step by step.
In /var/log/ there are three Xorg-entries: Xorg.1.log, Xorg.6.log and
Xorg.6.log.old as opposed to only two of them (all but the last) on running
clients.
Xorg.6.log has the following content: the regular part runs up to the line (==)
Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf". The next two lines read "Parse error
on line 91 of section Monitor in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The HorizSync keyword
must be followed by a list of nubmer or ranges."
It all ends with a "fatal server error: no screens found".
Xorg.6.log.old shows the same error message but terminates with additional
fatal server errors to "no screens found": "(WW) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE
failed: Bad file descriptor", ditto for VT_GETMODE and xf86OpenConsole for
VT_GETSTATE (whatever that means).
Indeed, the entry for HorizSync in /etc/X11/xorg.conf reads "68.0 - 61.0" which
does not seem very clever, indeed. On running clients it is "31.0 - 61.0".
I tried adding "X_HORZSYNC=31-61" to /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/lts.conf. Though it
does not produce any change. I switched the monitor to another client (of the
*same* kind) and got the same result. However, switching the monitor to another
client that has already been running with such a monitor, also the "broken"
monitor worked. So it seems that this "broken" monitor is not recognized well
but otherwise does work well.
My question is how to over-ride the automatic Xorg configuration that is
responsible for the erroneous "68.0 - 61.0" entry. Thanks for any suggestions!
Cheers!
