Folks using LTSP 4.2 might be interested in this... I recently started using Fluxbox as my window manager on an old laptop, and that led me down the path of reducing Gnome dependencies. As a consequence, I found a nice lightweight replacement for GDM. It's called WDM, or Wings Display Manager. It definitely loads faster than GDM on my oldish laptop (1.6 GHz P4).
Some other lightweight display managers that I found, but didn't test out much: XDM SLiM Entrance Another interesting option was qingy. It's a graphical replacement for getty. It operates outside of the X environment, using the framebuffer. I'm not sure how useful it would be to this crowd, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless. By the way, I chose WDM over the others for two reasons: it worked out of the box on my Debian Squeeze system, and it allowed for changing your session at the login screen (XDM, for instance, doesn't seem to allow this). -Rob ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ OpenSolaris 2009.06 is a cutting edge operating system for enterprises looking to deploy the next generation of Solaris that includes the latest innovations from Sun and the OpenSource community.
