I am not using gnome-screensaver. The xfce4 environment calls xscreensaver (or you can setup it as xscreensaver-demo)... maybe the Distort effect would be the best for such purpose (I did not find a simple slide-show). However, there may be problems for initial starting (prior to login, or after login)... I did not test it, but after starting it manually it shows me randomly the pictures from my albums... (I am not sure what was your real problem with gnome-screensaver...)
