I only did some minimal testing, but
 * The clients didn't crash, even 128 MB RAM clients loading 100 MB
   images (which normally results in 800 MB Xorg usage ==> instant
   crash),
 * There was no dithering on the images, so a small loss in quality.
 * I didn't notice any speed differences.

So at a first glance it looks like an acceptable workaround for low-RAM
terminal clients.
