If you have a switch or hub laying around that is different than what you are using on your main network, I would try that to see if it is an incompatibility problem with the switch. We bought some Intel Gigabit NIC's earlier this year, and they wouldn't work on a segment in our LAN that used a particular brand of networking hardware. I bought a couple of media converters and set up virtual LAN's on two of our switches so I could remove the odd networking hardware, and every works now. (Glory be to our holy God.)
