The answer you got is only 1/2 correct.

If the monitor is asked for its specs (EDID) it will overrule anything you 
specify unless you put a 'Don't ask for EDID' in your xorg file.

Since you are using a virtual machine the graphics card is probably 'unknown' 
or vesa. In both cases you cannot do better than 800x600.

I'm sure you *can* run guest additions on a VM under virtual box, but I've not 
found out how, and my VM clients are test-proof-of-concept so I've other 
things to worry about than the dreaded 800x600
