A brief update on this statement:  " this morning I tried upgrading
the clients chroot to kernel 3.0.0-14 and the clients stopped working.
 Had to revert to 3.0.0-12."

On a mostly-identical server, I made a fresh client from 3.0.0-14, and
that seems to work.  So, probably not the kernel's fault... maybe an
issue with updating in the chroot or the cumulative effect of changes
I'd made there.
