Before I found x2go I used http://www.nomachine.com/ which uses NX but, if
I remember right, there was a limit on the free licenses one could get.
X2Go has not limits.
As an extra endorsement about X2Go performance, we had picked up a small
laptop at, of all places, a pawn shop and for some reason couldn't get it
to connect to our network so we gave it to one of our students. It was
horrifically slow running XP but the first thing we did was install X2Go.
Today, while accessing our server through wireless and the web with X2Go
this little laptop performed like a champ. Programs like Gimp, Libre Office
Writer popped right up on the screen.
