Ok, I'll read those pages, sounds interesting.

What I intend is this: We now have old LTSP4.2 running (because of the 
old clients) with KDM. You can configure KDM via an XML file (bit 
roundabout, but it's possible at least). It shows two lines for input, 
username and password, on a panel with further controls (choose window 
manager etc.) and displays (date, clock). The panel is semi-transparent 
in the lower half of the screen above the custom background picture.

Certainly I do not expect to be able to copy the look-and-feel 100%, but 
it would be nice to be able to have 2 input lines at least, for instance.
