1) From some PC or client, ssh to your server as that ldap user:
some_pc$ ssh ldap_user.domain@server

Then, run that command, and tell us its output:
ldap_user@server$ getent passwd $(/usr/bin/id -u)

2) Login to the fat client using the "xterm" session from the 
preferences menu. Hopefully that will work even without $HOME being 
available. What's the output of the same command there?
ldap_user@client$ /usr/bin/getent passwd $(/usr/bin/id -u)
