I agree with Joseph, both with the usefulness of virus scanning in 
Linux and the choice of clamav as it is gpl and without cost.
Another (possibly with a larger database of known viruses than clamav 
has) option is antivirus proprietry software (free for non-commercial 
use) that runs on Linux called Bitdefender (from Romania) that was 
recommended a few years ago by Linux Format magazine out of the UK. Here 
were my posts that I wrote then on their forum.
