That sounds supiciously like you selected the Lubuntu session rather
than Lubuntu-custom ... alternately, edit the Exec line in
Lubuntu.desktop directly:

  Exec=/usr/local/bin/lubuntu-custom

Make sure /usr/local/bin/lubuntu-custom is marked executable.
