I'm the huge proponent of installing sandboxed versions of lua/luarocks together for each project. It ensures that changes you make to one project do not affect another. The current scripts I use for this is here: https://gist.github.com/1023085 It patches luaconf.h to ensure that the version of Lua being built only looks at the local directory for packages.
