Oh, apologies... I keep forgetting there are modules written by
non-luarocks users. (Collateral damage from long-time Perl use,
I guess ...)  But, for completeness:

I hadn't seen that one. On the T2 page it leads to broken links:

It doesn't do what I need, which is access to the curses level
to prevent me writing an app in Perl which I'd rather write
in Lua.  Sorry again for OT-ness, thanks for your help.
