To be honest, distro maintainers probably won't care, as they will
have to ensure the build dependencies are present anyway.

...as a user I'd be a bit confused. I expect a LuaRock (or Perl
package, or Python egg...) to install its dependencies via LuaRocks
(or CPAN or pypi...). A package might well require newer versions of
dependencies than exist in my distro anyway. So yes, please don't go
trying to mix packaging systems.
