btw, in the past my biggest 'waste-of-time' efforts were not a few
primitives or differences between engines but
- uncommunicated changes in filenames (of for instance pattern files)
- changes in tds (that affect scripts and tex/mp lookups)
- changes in fonts (files, metrics, etc)
- command line switches
so, it could be worse -)
