I have to apologize. The original report mentioned "damaging firmware" which turned out to be false after reading further.
Perhaps Apple is doing us a _favor_ by misbehaving so violently when such a broken CD is inserted. That could alert consumers about the brokenness of those bastardized CD's and people will know not to buy it.
