If I use the static IP address for all Windows machines, do I still need to enable WINS?

If you are going to use IP direct within the \\ address from the windows side, be aware that there are TWO ip addresses on the external interface of the Linux server. (Run ifconfig as root to see the IP addresses.) One
is a real Internet address, another is an alias that exists on your
RFC1918 private network behind your NAT. Your Windows client needs to use
the IP address on the same subnet, if DHCP probably private IP.

Thanks Warren,
I used ifconfig and tried both the static and DHCP addresses. Only the static IP address worked.
