Well, there is much to ponder from all your input, thanks. It's not leading to much faith in the few users I'm been able to convince to try Linux (or the rubberneckers) when I reinstall the OS (my own lacking) or switch to another distro. I was trying to build up more experience with the CentOS 4 desktop before deploying it on the server (currently running an outdated RedHat). However, the 2 replies (plus those on the CentOS forum) citing problems with updating CentOS are giving me second thought.
As for the problem PC, I had cold booted it and was ready to insert the CentOS CD to reinstall. Lo and behold, it successfully booted. If there is going to be any hope of converting users to Linux, I am going to have to stop hamstringing the effort using questionable/substandard hardware.
