Given that Microsoft has made the Microsoft variant "free" (as in beer), VMware is challenged to run on top of Windows. Microsoft will even support running linux on top of their Virtual Server product, as discussed.
Given that Xen is free (beer and speech) on all platforms, VMware is challenged everywhere else.
