Here's what I got back from an acquaintance at Apple:
I looked at this about 6 months ago, with an eye towards including
it in Leopard, and it wasn't baked enough - it blew up in some of
our file copy regression tests.
Perhaps a little later, with more bake time. People get
reaaaaally pissed off when you break their ssh (and "but... but it
goes faster!" is not going to pacify anyone).
