Thanks, guys, for the help in trying the 'nomodeset.' Regretfully, it didn't do the whole job, but at least this time I got an error message which flashed repeatedly with several seconds between each flash: (process:388): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
