I think it's based on xscreensaver being around and active during an upgrade. So if other flavours have xscreensaver installed and running, they would (as far as I know) see the same message for the same reason. >From memory, the issue the message is trying to prevent is that, if you upgrade it "underneath" a running copy, that copy can "get confused" and can lock the screen and become basically impossible to unlock, which makes continuing the install/upgrade rather hard :) If we care enough, I can try to dig into the xscreensaver package maintainer scripts and find more details... I think that's where this message is generated... but I honestly didn't consider that it was "a problem", to me it is just part of the upgrade process.
