I think most people expect there to be thumbnails.  It makes certain
tasks much easier, like looking through pictures, or movies.

Sure, but privacy is probably more important then convenience.
And it would be lighter in general use if only /Videos and /Pictures and other folders would be ignored.


If you don't like it turn it off  :D

Yes that is an option but, in regards of privacy, that is the wrong way around. :-)
