Perhaps to understand the versatility of "the other" MTAs, I'd recommend you
work your way up, comfortably. Upgrading to Postfix will show you how much
faster your MTA transfers can be, and will also introduce to use of Maildir
as a default configurable feature.

With Maildir, you will most likely use Qmail-POP3d as your POP3 server;
again here you will be introduced to Qmail, and so on and so on. My advice
would be to use the one you feel most comfortable with.

I have also really read alot about postfix, Qmail and Exim being more
versatile securitywise. However I cant really say much about them since
I am a sendmail guy mainly. Will try investing some hours this coming
december in studying Postfix and Qmail since they seem to be the more
talked about as sendmail alternatives.
