I've always found using RPM's (or any form of package management and
tracking) more enterprising. 

For instance, I find that RPM's help keep my system in order. On critical
servers, I find it crucial that a system be organised and that the result of
updates to programs and libraries is predictable and reliable.

While most RPM's will ship a version or 2 (or more) behind the latest source
update, I find it easy to simply build an RPM from a .spec file and the
updated source code, and voila, I have my latest source in RPM.

But then again, this is just me :).
