There's something I still need to figure out, though - don't know if it's my 
installation, but 'sudo' wants to root password when 'sudo su', rather than 
the password of the user I am currently logged in as - the user is already 
added to the sudo list of users.

The other thing I found strange was the permissions on /dev/null were not 
default, right from the initial installation. /dev/null had taken on 
attributes of being a normal file i.e. -rw-rw-rw, rather than crw-rw-rw- . 
Deleting it and running mknod again solved the problem. But before then, you 
get interesting problems, like SSHD failing to start!
