Finally figured this out (I like SuSE, but sometimes they get on my nerves :); The /etc/sudoers file contains the 'targetpw' option turned on by default. This option, essentially, asks for the password of the target user, who in the case of running 'sudo su', is root. Really don't get why SuSE left this turned on by default, but for those of you using SuSE 9.1 Pro, with this command, you probably want to disable this feature.
