......This year at CA World, it caught the attention of the press and the database world by announcing its decision to turn the Ingres database into an Open Source product. Judging by the preparation it had done, particularly the co-operative deals it has made with Open Source vendors, it is clear that CA is going to try to make a success of this endeavour. And if it is successful then we can probably expect further Open Source initiatives from CA.
Clearly, the problem for software vendors is how to make money out of Open Source, when the software itself will never generate a significant revenue stream. IBM and HP are doing fine out of Linux, but they're both able to make undiminished dollars from selling the hardware that runs Linux, Apache, Samba et al...........
